Excited to have one of my newest compositions premiered on December 3, 2015 by the University of Houston Moores School of Music Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Franz Krager.

The piece is entitled Triple Concerto and is written for full symphony orchestra, big band, and three trumpet soloists. This is a 15′ through-composed work. Thanks to Noe Marmolejo for acting as liaison to help make this happen.

Originally the piece was going to be premiered back in May 2015 featuring Mark Hughes (Houston Symphony), Chris Martin (Chicago Symphony), and the great trumpeter from Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Lew Soloff. However, due in part to the untimely passing of Soloff, the premiere was pushed back to December.

The new soloists will be Mark Hughes, Bob Walp (Houston Symphony), and multiple GRAMMY winner, Randy Brecker.

This work definitely represents a big part of my writing efforts this past year and any friends in Houston in early December – would LOVE to see you at the premiere.

I have a wonderful announcement! Just found out that I have been selected as:

“Silicon Valley Artist Laureate” for this year! This is an amazing honor and I am thrilled beyond words to be included with 140 artists that have been recognized in the 25 years of this program.

This program is funded by Silicon Valley Creates and the receipt of this award is to help support my work as an artist.

I was selected in the “Off Stage” category, which essentially is recognizing my achievements in composition and arranging for ensembles.

Other categories include “On Stage” (performing of various kinds: music, acting, etc.), “On the Wall” (visual art of various kinds: painting, installations, etc.), “Off the Wall” (sculpture, etc.), and also an award for young/up-and-coming artists.

I can’t thank Silicon Valley Creates enough for selecting me for this unbelievable honor; their support of the arts in Silicon Valley is to be applauded!

Excited to be heading to the JEN Conference in San Diego a bit later today to play with the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra and also see and network with a lot of old friends and colleagues.

Have been reflecting on 2014 and so many wonderful things have happened:

Celebrated my 16th anniversary with my wife Victoria.

My kids celebrated their 6th and 3rd birthdays and they are awesome!

Started my 11th year teaching at SJSU.

The big Grammy win with Pacific Mambo Orchestra was certainly a high point – many thanks to Steffen, Christian Tumalan and all the PMO gang. Looking forward to our single!

Released a new record with my long time partner in musical crime, Paul Tynan with our group BiCoastal Collective.

Recorded a new record with the powerhouse group the Tommy Igoe Groove Conspiracy.

Got to record several singles with longtime guitarist from Iggy and the Stooges, James Williamson.

My sister in law Jennifer DeBenedetti got married.

My brother Chip Oliphant got engaged.

Had a great family vacation to Maui.

All in all, a GREAT year. I am a very lucky man to have so many wonderful friends and family members in my life with whom I can share my experiences.

Wishing you all the very best – A
